Welcome to Foggy Bottoms! I enjoy taking pictures of natural scenery and small towns.
But lately, it’s fog that attracts me. Fog flies in the face of photography. The fog makes it difficult to focus, it reduces contrast, alters colors and/or hides objects. On the other hand, its effects and surreal nature add mood and mystery to any image.
One of my most treasured memories occurred when my brother and I were paddling kayaks on Lake Ozette when fog rolled in from the Pacific, about 2 miles away. We could only see each other and paddled the next hour by compass until we reached Tivoli Island. We often interpret images in accordance with our personal experiences. Perhaps I enjoy fog experiences because of some pleasant experiences.
I’ve renamed this photo gallery as Foggy Bottoms. (The singular of that name is most often associated with a Washington DC neighborhood or nearby Department of State offices) The word “bottoms” refers more universally to the lower part of valleys, near rivers and other wetlands. There are Foggy Bottom companies and towns in various states. I could not ignore the charm of using that term for my new found photographic interest.
